How much do the world top chess grandmasters make?

Chess grandmasters make most of there money by writing books on chess, whether it be tactics or strategy. Winning large tournaments only gives between 1-10 thousand dollars. I would say the really lucky ones get 250 thousand a year, but an average would be more like 140.
