Does ex bf really want to remain friends or he is just saying it?

my long distance ex bf broke up with me 2 weeks ago. He said its because he couldnt handle the distance and want to remain friends just in case we may be able to get back together in future. I really dont see it happening because we stay across the globe from each other. Why did he say he wants to be friends... is it to make the break up less painful?
